Spot Fake Maurice Malone Products: A Photo Guide
Protecting the Integrity of Maurice Malone Designs
From our beginnings in the early 1980s to today, the Maurice Malone name has always represented high-quality, creative designs. One thing we’ve consistently prioritized is protecting the integrity of our logos. Like most major brands, our logo is more than just a name on a product—it’s a trademark that carries our identity and standards.
Counterfeiters, on the other hand, don’t share the same respect or attention to detail. Their primary focus is slapping a recognizable name onto poorly made products to make a quick profit, often sacrificing artistic integrity in the process. One telltale sign of fakes is logo overload. Unlike counterfeit designs that flood garments with logos, we’ve always been strategic and intentional with the placement and frequency of our branding.
Another clear indicator of counterfeits is poorly replicated or distorted logos. Authentic Maurice Malone logos adhere to precise standards for shape, font, and placement. For example, we never stretch, skew, or distort our logos to fit a space. Any authorized use of our trademarks must comply with these rules, and anything outside of that is simply not ours.
Take a look at the image above. Notice the "M" in the fake logo—it comes to a point at the bottom center of the letter. That’s not our design. Authentic Maurice Malone logos feature bold, thick fonts, both in the "M" and the "Malone" text.
Identifying Counterfeits by Country of Origin
In addition to logo inconsistencies, the origin of a garment can also help you spot a fake. In the 1990s, we produced most of our nylon down coats, jackets, and other outerwear in South Korea. Unfortunately, South Korea was also a hotspot for counterfeit production at the time. However, it’s important to note that we never manufactured t-shirts or cotton garments in South Korea. If you come across a t-shirt, hoodie, or sweatshirt made of cotton and labeled as made in South Korea, it’s not authentic. All of our cotton shirts were made in the USA, Hong Kong, or China—nowhere else.
Malaysia is another significant source of counterfeits. We’ve never produced anything in Malaysia, and we strongly advise against purchasing items made in or shipped from there.
Japan, on the other hand, has historically been a safer market for authentic Maurice Malone products. We had a licensed distributor there, and our trademarks were generally well-policed. Additionally, Japanese sellers have tended to be more respectful of selling genuine items. That said, no market is immune to counterfeits, so buyers should still exercise caution.
By staying informed and paying close attention to details like logo design, garment origin, and branding standards, you can avoid counterfeit products and ensure your collection features only authentic Maurice Malone pieces.
